On 4th April 2023, a group of four physical therapy students from Mahidol University had a memorable and inspiring visit to the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD). They were facilitated by two faculties lecturers who are experts in physical and mental rehabilitation. The visit was part of their Clinic 6th course, which prepares them for their future roles as CBID practitioners. At APCD, they met with staff and trainees with disabilities who shared their stories of empowerment and inclusion. Visitors viewed how APCD supports individuals with disabilities to participate and integrate into various implementing activities, such as education, employment, health, empowerment, and social participation. They also learned about the challenges and opportunities that individuals with disabilities encounter in their daily lives, and how physical and mental rehabilitation can enable them to overcome barriers and achieve well-being and quality of life. The visit concluded with a lively discussion among the visitors and the APCD staff. They exchanged their views and ideas on how to strengthen the partnership and networking among different stakeholders, such as family members, service providers, physical & mental therapists, and individuals with disabilities themselves. They also reflected that rehabilitation, empowerment, and a barrier-free society are correlated and complementary concepts that need to be implemented holistically and sustainably. Asst. Prof. Dr. Pakaratee, who is an APCD alumni of the Training of Trainers on CBID towards sustainability in 2012, is grateful APCD for sharing their valuable experiences and knowledge with her students. She said that she will continue to apply what she learned from APCD for her teaching and practicing and involve her students in CBID initiatives.
